Wallpaper Installation: Preparing The Paper
from: SelfHomeImprovement.comThe second step to wallpaper installation is preparing the wallpaper itself. This assumes that you have purchase the most common wallpaper, which is pre-pasted products. If you have purchased product that needs to be pasted, before being applied to the wall, it is best to follow the instructions provided by your paper's manufacturer. This will tell you how much and what type of adhesive to use. The process is fairly specific to each type of paper you may buy.
With clean walls, unroll one of the rolls of wallpaper you have. Place it against the wall to give you an idea of the actual sizing. Then, use a tape measure to measure the size of the paper you need for the first run. Cut this length, but do leave some extra room for mistakes. When you repeat this process again, you will need to align the pattern on the wallpaper before you measure it, to ensure that the wallpaper aligns properly.
The first step when preparing the paper for installation is to soak the wallpaper. Again, the manufacturer will provide you with specific directions on how long to allow the paper to soak, but generally the goal is to simply get it wet so that the adhesive on the back is activated. You will want to roll the wallpaper up in the opposite direction you will apply it. That way, when you reroll it after it has been wetted, it will be in the proper position for hanging.
Once the wallpaper has been wetted, roll it back up on itself, so that the adhesive is facing outward. This way, when you place it onto the wall, it is easy to do so. The less amount of handling you can do with the paper the better off the wallpaper installation process will be. Remember that every time you touch the paper, that is one more opportunity that you will rip it.
Preparing the paper in this manner is simplistic, especially when you are using easy hang wallpaper. If you do need to handle the pasting, you generally will need to soak the wallpaper first, then apply the pasting to the back of the paper according to the directions of the manufacturer. This is best applied using a paint roller.
With the adhesive on the wallpaper, it is time to position it on the wall. A word of warning: be careful at this point. You can easily slip on the dripping wallpaper especially if you are climbing on a ladder. Hanging wallpaper at this point is not too difficult, assuming that you have some patience to work with it! Remember too that this first placement of wallpaper is the hardest since you do have to take into consideration the angles of the wall and the paper.
