Home décor for the fall - five tips to harmonization

from: SelfHomeImprovement.com

As the name indicates, fall is a season when the leaves on trees change color and they fall off. This is because the trees are preparing for winter. The whole of nature in fact, tumbles about in preparation for the coming of winter. There is a hue of colors about, on the trees, on the ground where leaves have fallen and on foliage. Animals too undergo changes that prepare them for winter. You too could prepare your home for the coming of winter through some fall decoration.

Add color to your home. Bring out the bright bed spreads, the lively kitchen linen and the exciting drapes. Since color is in bounty in the environment, it the season to be adventurous without going overboard. Some of the colors that go with the season are pastel reds, light browns, yellows and fawn. The curtains especially could do with a change and adding color to the home shows the spirit to be lively.

Fall is a time of scent, and there's the odor of composting leaves, of humidity settling into furniture and within the home. Add to the scent with joss sticks or scented oils with which to polish the floor or wooden surfaces (you must ensure the oils are safe to be used on these surfaces). Bathrooms are especially a delight to decorate with scented candles and bathing products that add to the flavor of the season.

Next, prepare the exterior of your home for winter by undertaking some external decorative measures. Instead of burning or disposing of fallen leaves with the garbage, stow leaves in a compost pit with a wooden fence. Besides providing your garden with a few rustic touches, the compost would turn to humus by spring and would be excellent natural fertilizer for your garden. Other decorative, yet practical tricks are to store wood in decorative shapes (such as a car or shed), which may be covered on the top with water proof material. This is handy for when winter comes should you have a wood burning fireplace.

Fourth on the list of tips to spice up your home with fall decoration is adding the little touches that traditionally indicate the storage of food. Bushels of grain, hung on a kitchen wall or a twig wreath with dried fruit like apricot hung from the ceiling are a great decorative touch. Twig wreaths that have a layer of varnish may be hung on the front door, to indicate the seasonal change, and the approach of winter.

Finally, move the furniture closer together. Autumn is a time when family and friends gather in the home and comfortable settings are the call for the season. If you have outdoor barbecue gatherings, then the outdoor area could also be decorated with figurines and totems.
