Paint Tips For Common Paint Problems

from: SelfHomeImprovement.com

You may have thought that painting would be a simple project. It should be and most often it is. But, as you begin to do the work of the project, you may find that you are running into problems. Things are not going well. The good news is that most paint problems have an easy fix to them. Start off your paint project by cleaning out the room, removing any and all dirt and dust from the wall and fixtures, and then apply the product properly according to manufacturer instructions.

Cures For Paint Problems

Here are a few paint tips for some of the more common paint problems you may run into.

Rusty, old nails: When you are painting over surfaces where there are, or were, nails, you need to take special care of these spaces. Nail heads often cause rust and rush spots on the surface. You can avoid this process in the future by simply using coated steel nails and ensuring the surface is protected from moisture. Remove the stained paint from around the nail. You will then need to sand the area down, around the nail head. After this point, use a nail punch to lower the nail head about 1/8 of an inch below the surface. Then, use an even layer of undercoat over the top of the area to protect it. You can then prime and paint the area properly.

Under hang paint peeling: Peeling paint in areas that are untouched by weather for the most part, may be due to a salt deposit. Normally, this salt will wash away with the rain, but in areas such as your under hang, the rain does not get to it to wash it clean. Remove any peeling paint. Then, wash the area properly using a clean such as a tri sodium phosphate. After it dries, sand the area down and apply two coats of a top rate under coating. This will seal off the area and protect it.

Paint flaking: If paint on your home is flaking, this is often caused by a moisture build up behind the painted surface. For example, if the wood under the paint has absorbed moisture, this could cause the flaking to happen. The first thing you need to do is to find the source of the moisture and fix that problem. Then, you need to remove the paint, sand and apply a heavy duty undercoat to the surface. This will lock out any additional moisture from damaging the wood.

Virtually all types of paint problems can be fixed. Find the source of the problem and work to improve that problem first. These paint tips can be very helpful for the do it yourselfer, but if the job gets complex or is a lot of work, you may want to work with a professional contractor instead.
