A few simple things you can do make the painting project truly successful.
Here are some tips to help you to improve your painting method so that the finished project looks professionally done. This assumes you have all of the proper painting supplies and will be using a quality paint.
Place a small amount of paint on your brush to do the trim work. Hold the brush at an angle, so that only the tops of the bristles are brushing the wall, and the handle is pointing away from the edge you don't want to get paint on. Use even strokes, from the from to the back. This helps you to avoid getting paint on areas you do not want to.
Finish all the trim work first. This way, you can hide the brush strokes when you go over it with a roller. Do a line of trim against the ceiling and along the floor, since these are areas you want to spend a bit of extra time getting right. Otherwise, you will be scrubbing paint off the area.
To paint a large wall, apply a decent amount of paint to the roller. It should be saturated, but not dripping with paint. Then, apply a large "M" shape over the wall. This way, the paint is evenly applied over the wall. You can then use your roller in a back and forth motion to apply paint lengthwise across the wall.
Avoid going straight up and down with the roller. You do not want to create any type of line. Rather, apply the paint at an angle and change that angle often. This allows the paint to be applied evenly without the creation of any lines.
Apply a second coat of paint as necessary. In most situations, a second coat is needed. Not only does it add richness to the paint color and hide the blemishes underneath, but it also helps you to get an even layer of paint on the wall. The last pass over the painted surface should be a light, up and down stroke to even it out. Use a roller lightly dipped into the paint.
These small painting methods can improve the look of any space. Be sure that you take your time. Go over the area well. Generally, you will not need a lot of paint and you should not need more than two coats unless you are trying to cover a dark color.
