Home Security Systems: Wired or Wireless?

from: SelfHomeImprovement.com

If you've began to look at home security systems, you may have noticed you can opt for a hard wired system or a completely wireless system. Which one is best? In this article, we'll look at the advantages and disadvantages of both.

Wireless Home Security Systems

With a wireless home security, you won't have to worry about concealing wires under rugs or carpets, or even worse, having the unsightly wires exposed. You will, however, have to check the batteries every now and then to ensure they are working properly and replace them when necessary. Wireless systems also offer more portability as you can take them with you when you move. They may be a little more expensive than hard wired systems but are easier to install if you are doing it yourself.

Some people worry about whether wireless home security systems will have any interference from cordless phones or other electronics that use radio frequencies and this was a major concern at one time. However, for the most part, most wireless security systems operate on a frequency that is unique and do not encounter any interference from other products. One of the biggest advantages to installing the wireless home security system is that it is far easier and takes less time than the hard wired ones do. In addition, wireless systems often offer more ways of protection because they can utilize wireless motion detectors and laser beams to protect your home.

Another advantage to the wireless home security system is that you can easily move the components any time you wish. Whether you add on to your home or would just like to change where some of the components are, this can be accomplished far easier with the wireless systems. In addition, you can always add more components without having to worry about running more wire.

Wired Home Security Systems

Wired home security systems may be somewhat less expensive than their wireless counterparts but they are more elaborate to install. If you are paying someone to install the system, your savings could be wiped out by labor costs. While they are not difficult to install at all, you may have some challenges hiding the wires. Obviously, installing a hard wired home security system is going to take more time than installing a wireless one.

Although wired home security systems don't require batteries to run, it is a good idea to get a system that uses battery backup so that you are still protected in the event of a power outage.

Whichever system you choose, the decision should be based solely on your needs as they are both instrumental in deterring intruders from invading your home.
