Seasonal Maintenance Tasks for Fall

from: SelfHomeImprovement.com

As with Spring, there are certain home maintenance tasks that work best for fall and then there is the endless list of things you must take care of that know no season at all. While Spring has us getting a lot of things out of storage, fall means putting many things, such as outdoor play equipment and patio furniture, into storage. Here are some other home maintenance things that are good to do in the fall.

Fall is the time to get ready for winter and there are some important tasks that really do need to be done this time of year. For example, if you have a fireplace, fall is the perfect time to clean it out and stock up with wood for the winter. After the leaves have fallen, it will be time to clean the gutters and rake the leaves. While you are cleaning out the gutters, inspect them for damage and repair if necessary.

Have your heating system serviced and change the filter. Make sure any floor vents are free of debris as it is amazing what tiny hands can shove between the grates. Replace any loose vents. There are many tasks that involve winterizing your home, such as replacing weather stripping, caulking, wrapping pipes with insulation, and making any repairs, such as in torn window screens or anything else that may let cold air into your home or warm out.

Fall is a great time to check and replenish your emergency supplies. You may also want to do this in the Spring as well in preparation for storms that may cause a loss of power. You can check the Red Cross website for a list of essential supplies but plan to have plenty of water, candles, batteries, battery powered radio or weather radio, flashlight, nonperishable foods, such as can goods, breakfast bars, and crackers. Do rotate your supply so that the food won't go to waste if there is not an emergency. If you keep the kind of food and snacks that you eat anyway in your emergency kit, then it will be easy to rotate your stock so that you will always have a fresh supply.

Fall is the perfect time to weed out any old spices and replace them with new ones. Throw out any spices that you can no longer smell or if they are a year old. Also, start watching the sales for holiday baking supplies and begin to plan your holidays as well.

Just like Spring, you'll want to pack away the summer clothes and get out the winter ones. Change all décor to reflect the new season. Fall is also a good time to turn mattresses and take care of any Spring cleaning chores that didn't get done. Shampoo carpets while it is still early before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season starts. Do the important twice a year tasks like checking the smoke detectors, water heater, and it is also a good time to clean and disinfect indoor and outdoor trash cans.
