10 - Insects and Attics

from: SelfHomeImprovement.com

Sometimes attics can make perfect homes for insects. Some types of bugs thrive in the hot humid conditions of the summer. That is not to mention the many types of bugs that like to burrow and make their homes in attic insulation. The following paragraphs will discuss a few of the common breeds of insects that like to make attics their home. They will also discuss different methods of ridding your attic of these pests.

One type of insect that commonly makes a pest of itself in attics are bees and wasps. Most homeowners mistakenly believe if they find the entrance way and block it off, the bees or wasps will suffocate and die off. While this may eliminate the bee or wasp problem temporarily, it can also cause some problems. Even if all the bees or wasps die, their hives and possibly honey will be left behind. This promotes new colonies to take over, and if the honey combs are allowed to ferment, it can cause a nasty mess to clean up. The best way to eliminate bees or wasps in your attic is to use insecticide to kill off the entire colony. Once you are sure all the insects are dead, remove their hives, their honey combs, and any evidence they have left behind. After doing this, seal up all possible entrances, and your bee or wasp problem should be solved.

Another type of insects that often find their way into attics is cockroaches. Cockroaches are not as easily eliminated as bees and wasps. While insecticides can kill any adult cockroaches, they will not affect the millions of babies roaches who are being protected by egg cases.. The best way to eliminate cockroaches in your attic is to use bait, in addition to spray insecticide, to kill them. In addition, you should find a different area of the house to store any old papers, old books, or old clothes and vacuum your attic regularly. When cockroaches cannot find any other source of food, they commonly eat their friends, or the remains of their friends.

No matter what type of insect infestation you may have in your attic, you should never set of fumigators or bug bombs in order to try to control your problem. Even with the heating system turned off, there have been reports of this type of attic extermination going bad when the cans explode. In addition, the effectiveness of these products are most generally only one step above useless. If you find that you cannot control the insect problem in your attic on your own, it's best to call in a professional attic exterminator to assist you.

Even when you think you have all the cracks and crevices of your attic sealed, sometimes insects still find their way in. If you notice you have an insect problem in your attic, do not fret. Your problem can be solved.
